I tried starting Arduino manually using the java command but I may be missing something on either the required libs (and classpath) or the required properties (is javaroot used for anything?) You need to download a recent jre on your own (from http://java.com/it/download/).

This is not a nice Arduino experience, especially with a system and starter kit that looks so well crafted...It's strange that Arduino software only works on a old Java version.
